What’s going on in the profession?

The Physiotherapy Alberta College + Association was required to separate the College’s regulatory activities from its association-related member support services. Because of this, the Alberta Association of Physiotherapy was created to offer services separate from the single-mandate College.

The College will continue to provide services related to registration and ensuring compliance with the profession’s practice standards. Support and advocacy for physiotherapists and students will shift to the new association.

Why is the College and Association separating?

These changes are required in response to Bill 46 which was passed by the Government of Alberta in December 2020.

What's the status of the association now?

The new association was led by a committee that was formed in June 2021. This group of six physiotherapists formed the inaugural board of directors when the association was incorporated.

The AAP is a branch of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.

When will the new association be fully up and running?

The new association is being built from the ground up and more services will be added in response to what we hear as priorities from our members. You may find that some services that you previously accessed through the joint College and Association are not available. Please be patient as we transfer content and services to the new association. We will appreciate hearing from you about what services you are seeking that you can’t find. This will help us to prioritize how we serve our members.

Will there be an actual office?

With current uncertainties around in-person working and public health, the association will operate virtually for the near future. We will take this as an opportunity to build a strong and stable organization to serve our members before committing to offices and other infrastructure costs.

Will joining the new association affect my membership in the CPA?

The AAP is a branch of the CPA. CPA members will become members of the AAP. If you are a new member of the AAP and you would like to join the CPA, please contact the CPA at this link.

Can the new association help me navigate the examination and registration process?

We will work closely with our colleagues at the College to make sure that PTs and PT students receive current and credible information regarding the examination and registration process. Many aspects of advocating for students and PTs on the provisional register will be taken over by the association.

How will separation of the association from the College + Association affect my insurance? Will I still get access to the TD Affinity products?

Agreements with TD Meloche Monnex currently held by the former Physiotherapy Alberta College + Association will continue as they are for the early part of 2022. TD Meloche Monnex is committed to continuing service with any physiotherapists in their programs.
